Hairdressing is more than just a job; it’s a passion, and to be honest, it’s one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world. As one of Lichfield’s best hairdressers, we take a look at life behind the chair and uncover the truth about hairdressing.
It might look like we have it easy – chatting away, snipping at split ends, and effortlessly working the ghds. But those who know the industry understand why we love this crazy, zany career, constantly switching between the roles of mathematician, scientist, socialite, and psychologist and why we wouldn’t have it any other way.
If you’ve ever enjoyed turning a blank canvas into a work of art, then you can imagine what it’s like to be a hairdresser. Every guest we seat is a new opportunity to create something beautiful, something that makes our guests feel good about themselves. The artistic freedom that comes with hairdressing is unique. We have the opportunity to experiment with colours, textures, and styles, tailoring each look to match our guests’ personality, lifestyle, and hair goals. When you sit in the chair and say, “Do whatever you think will look good,” that’s our moment to shine. Whether it’s opting for this season’s on-trend colours, a sharp precision cut, or a subtle transformation, we have the chance to express our creativity, one snip at a time. One of the best aspects of hairdressing is the deep emotional connection we build with our guests. For many, a visit to Obsession Salon & Spa is more than just a practical requirement—it’s much welcomed therapy. As a hairdresser, we become your confidant, friend, and sometimes even your life coach. As guests, you trust us not only with your hair but with your stories, secrets, and dreams.
There’s something incredibly fulfilling about knowing that we’re making a positive impact on your life, even if it’s just by giving you a great haircut or helping you choose a style that makes you feel amazing. We get to watch you walk out of the salon with a spring in your step and we know that we’ve made your day just a little bit better.
Forget about a regular 9-to-5 job; hairdressing is anything but predictable. Each day brings a new set of challenges, from a guest who wants a total hair transformation to a guest who just can’t decide between layers or a bob. There’s the challenge of recreating a magazine look which might have taken six hours, several stylists, and a lot of retouching to perfect, but we aim to achieve the same results in a single session. And then there’s the thrill of working under pressure, whether it’s perfecting an updo for a wedding or using our extensive knowledge of chemistry to time the prefect colour – too long can damage your hair, while underdevelopment can lead to disaster.
While there’s no doubt that hairdressing is an incredible job; it’s creative, flexible, and emotionally rewarding, but it’s also physically demanding and requires a high level of skill and dedication.
We combine science and maths with an artist’s eye for beauty and detail, calculating the precise angle to cut each strand so that it falls perfectly every time, even after you leave the salon. We twist our bodies into demanding positions, standing and bending for most of the day and the same meticulous care is given to our last guest of the day as we did to the first, no matter how many we’ve seen. Plus, there’s the investment in our tools – our scissors alone cost between £200 to £2,000 of our own money, just to make sure our guests’ hair isn’t damaged by blunt blades.
We never switch off either. Even at the end of the day, when our social energy is depleted and we’re craving silence we can’t help but take a peek at social media to see what new trends are emerging. After all, who wants to be stuck doing the same thing forever? We pride ourselves on having our finger on the pulse when it comes to the latest technologies just as much as we’re eager to master the latest colour techniques that L’Oreal train us on.
Yet despite the challenges, hairdressing is one of the most fulfilling jobs out there. The hard work pays off in the form of loyal guests, creative satisfaction, and the knowledge that we’re making a difference in people’s lives every single day.
Society is prioritising self-expression and self-care more now than ever and as such, the demand for skilled, creative hairdressers is only going to grow.
Hairdressing is more than just a job—it’s a passion, a creative outlet, and a way to make a real difference in people’s lives. It’s about building relationships, embracing challenges, and having the freedom to create something beautiful every day. Yes, it’s hard work, and yes, it takes skill, dedication, and a lot of patience. But for those who truly love what they do, hairdressing is the best job in the world.
So, here’s to the hairdressers, the artists behind the chair, who make the world a more stylish, confident, and beautiful place—one haircut at a time.
