Technical Director and colour expert, Danny, has been with Obsession Salon & Spa for 14 years. For those that don’t know Danny, you might not be aware of just how passionate he is about two things – the gym and colour. So yes, when he’s not in the gym pumping iron, he’s talking all things colour. He has a natural eye for colour but sometimes that isn’t a good thing. “Right now, I’m about to move house and shopping for furniture is a nightmare. All I can see is different tones in everything from fabric to paint. It’s making the decision making r-e-a-l-l-y difficult!” says Danny.
In salon, Danny loves to approach each colour service with a detailed consultation to find out exactly what his client is looking for. “I try to really understand my guest’s needs.” says Danny. “I want to know why they want to change their hair colour. Is there a specific reason or need? Have they seen something that has inspired them? Have they got a special event coming up? What is their lifestyle like? How much time can they devote to their hair care? No two guests who are the same. Many of our guests come into salon wanting a refresh but when I sit down to talk to them, they’re open to a change but just aren’t sure or confident enough to look beyond what they previously had.
I will always assess my guests’ hair and see if there may be anything that could interfere with the end-result and give them a journey to get to where they want to be. I like to assess the hair in sections from (natural) root to (maybe coloured) ends to see a breakdown of the processes involved in the colour appointment.
I also like to give clients information and share my knowledge of natural hair colour or artificial colour and how it can impact the service/look they are wanting to achieve; I’m often asked by colleagues as a second brain in a colour conundrum or to clarify anything. Just recently my colleague Phoebe (our Artistic Director) was wanting some advice on creating a stunning mustard yellow colour for a competition entry. Here’s a snippet from our WhatsApp conversation so that you can see the blend of creative thinking and technical knowledge:
Danny: Wouldn’t have to lift much past a yellow to be fair as you’re wanting the vibrancy
Phoebe: Just wondering what I could tone with. Perhaps lift to a yellow and then tone with a gold?
Danny: Majirel (L’Oréal) used to do a pure mix yellow and maybe a tiny squeeze of copper to add a bit of richness because the yellow on its own would just be meh!
Phoebe: Perfect. Thanks Danny!
I spend a lot of time working with L’Oréal and am lucky enough to see new products and new colours coming through all the time so I can advise my clients on the latest techniques, products and colours. By asking the right questions and really listening to my clients I can combine that with my knowledge of the latest trends and give my clients something they didn’t even know they wanted but that they are hopefully delighted with.
Some hair trends that I’ve heard coming up include adding some warmth back into the hair which is a nice change from higher maintenance cooler-coloured hair which has the tendency to fade out quicker. The more ‘lived-in’ natural colour is definitely back, possibly from living through lockdown and learning to break away from heavy colouring. Looks such as more subtlety in the highlights (baby lights), and even longer-rooted ombré (which most people came out of lockdown with 🤣) are definitely coming through as a big trend for 2022.
Winter is a really good time of the year to think about colour. It can boost your mood and if the right products are chosen can really help to condition and nourish dry winter hair. Olaplex is my favourite product at the moment. It’s a two-part bond-protecting additive. The bonds within the hair help dictate the structure of the hair, that over time can become fluffy or frizzy from colour and Olaplex helps rectify this. Part one is added into all parts of a colour service, from lightener to tint and toners; Part two is then applied post colour as a finish. It can also be used as a stand-alone service to help repair bonds within the hair leaving it feeling strong and conditioned. I also love L’Oreal’s Metal Detox, which neutralises hair and ensures hair colour lasts for longer. We’re offering a complimentary Metal Detox when full highlights or colour are booked at the moment so it’s worth mentioning when you book.
If anyone is thinking about a new colour for their hair and is slightly nervous, I’d say just come in for an initial chat. There’s no obligation and you’ll soon get a feel for whether you think it’s right for you. I’ll show you a selection of shades and talk you through the process including the aftercare so you can decide if it’s the right time for you. The worst that will happen is you have a complimentary coffee and the best that can happen – you’ll be on your way to a new you!”
