Ever heard of emotional skincare?

If this is the first you've heard about it, don't worry, most people will not yet have heard about emotional skin care. So what is it? In short a beauty industry buzzword, but in reality the concept of it is going to huge over the coming years. 

For years people have treated skin as though it is something completely separate to the rest of the body. Emotional skincare is about understanding that your skin is actually a true reflection of what is going on inside of you. This means the stress you face each day, what you eat and drink, the environment you live and work in, the people you surround yourself with, the thoughts you have about yourself and others, habits you have such as drinking or smoking, fatigue, sleep and so the list goes on. Your mind and body are connected. You cannot do something to one without it affecting the other. In this way if you are in a constant state of stress, this will manifest itself through your skin in the form of breakouts, irritation, dryness, redness and even premature aging.

Emotional skincare is about taking a step back and looking at yourself holistically - we don't mean suddenly take up the lotus position and start praying OM to the yoga gods (although that would help) but more taking a look at yourself as a whole. 

The idea is to improve your overall physical and mental wellbeing and this will impact positively on your skin. Similarly taking time out for yourself and immersing in relaxation will have a calming effect on your mind and body too. Skincare now is moving in the direction of this ideology whereby ingredients are organic, more natural and sustainably sourced, scents are even more focused around calm and relaxation and clients are given options to match products to how they are feeling.

There are lots of ways you can start to tackle your own mind and body wellbeing. Looking at each area of your life from work, relationships through to diet, exercise and sleep is a good start. Focus on improving just something small in each area that will improve your mental or physical health and you will notice a difference in your skin.
