One of the most frequently asked skin care questions our therapists get is, ‘what do I really need to be using every day on my skin?’
With so many products out there, skincare can get complicated and overwhelming. Fortunately, we can dispel the myths and give you our 7 steps to beautiful skin.
This is the key part of your Skincare routine. One of the most important things to do before touching your face is to wash your hands! We recommend you apply a small amount of cleanser and work in circles using your middle and ring fingers. Starting at the bottom and massaging upwards gives you a bit of a lift, using finger tips the idea is to be firm but not to apply too much pressure. All cleanser requires washing off by simply splashing with lukewarm water and patting with a towel to dry with a towel. It is important to cleanse the skin twice, the first one will remove make up and surface residue, the second will cleanse the skin.
Toner is a must for a good skincare routine. Not only does it close your pores and rebalance the PH levels in your skin, it removes traces of oil and dirt that remain from cleansing and hydrates the skin. Caring for the health of your skin pores is a bit like caring for the health of your body. You need to do it daily!
Our Head of Spa, Kirsten, says this is something new to the industry. It is a way of adding an essential extra layer to your skincare routine without your skin feeling heavy. It is liquid as a toner and as concentrated as a serum. To be applied after toning before serum. They not only does it add that essential extra layer of hydration but actually supersizes any other product you put on top; carrying the products deeper into the skin.
Serums tend to confuse people. We are often asked if we need them, why we need them, does it replace a moisturiser and so on. The simple answer is that a serum solves specific problems like dehydration, wrinkles, age spots and so on. The serum contains most of the active ingredients, they are fast absorbing and prepares the skin to receive other products more efficiently – making them an essential stage of the skincare routine. These are to be applied after toning and before moisturising.
Moisturising does just what is says; it moisturises! Our skin is always evaporating, so the key is to layer products to try and prevent this as much as possible. Dry and dehydrated skin can lead to premature ageing, skin loses its glow and lacks lustre. You may think that if your skin is oily you don’t need a moisturiser, this is a myth you do! It just means you skin has more lipids in, which keeps the skin suppler which will mean it will age slower. You skin can still become de-hydrated so you need to apply a light a moisturiser to keep it hydrated.
The skin around the eye area is particularly delicate, it is a lot thinner than the skin on the rest of your face, we always recommend using a special eye cream. As the cream designed for the face are too heavy for this delicate area. The skin around the eye has very few moisture glands, so it is especially important for you to use an eye cream – it will help with dark circles and puffiness and to help keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay. It is important to apply an eye cream before your moisturiser and only apply using the ring finger with gentle patting motion around the orbital bone.
Not everyone uses masks because they are often seen as a treat, rather than part of a normal skincare routine. Masks are an essential part of your routine, they are more concentrated than a moisturiser. Face masks are like your own mini facial at home, sleeping in certain mask gives you maximum results whist your skin is in recovery mode.
